Here's a more detailed summary of the curriculum:
1st Year
During the 1st year, you take courses in natural science, social medicine and biostatistics, Latin language and medical terminology, and general Bulgarian language. These courses provide students with a strong foundation. So you are prepared for the upcoming years!
2nd Year
The focus of the 2nd year is to build upon the foundational knowledge from the 1st year. You also begin to narrow down the scope of studies towards the biomedical sciences. They are most relevant for a practising physician. You will take more specialised courses, including
- Pharmacology
- Roentgenology and radiology,
- Clinical pathology (super interesting - my fav subject so far!)
3rd Year
In the 3rd year, you start to transition from classroom to clinical work. You start to work with patients at hospitals. You will learn about important aspects of medicine including ethics, pathology, psychology, hygiene and ecology, microbiology, and surgery. You will also learn about the use of radiology in medical diagnosis and the communication skills necessary for working with patients. Additionally, you will gain knowledge and skills in diagnosing and treating internal diseases and other medical conditions.
4th Year
During this year, you continue to develop your clinical skills and knowledge, with more advanced courses in various medical fields, including roentgenology, radiology and clinical immunology. The 4th year is definitely one of the more challenging years. It involves advanced courses in various medical fields, which require a higher level of understanding and expertise. In addition, students are expected to apply their theoretical knowledge in practical settings, which can be demanding and require a lot of hard work and dedication.
5th Year
Your 5th year is focused on clinical specialisation. By then you might have developed your interests and preferences. You will have the opportunity to delve deeper into areas of medicine that interest them.
6th Year
The 6th year of the program is dedicated to pre-graduate internship. Here you complete rotations in various medical departments, including internal medicine, surgery, paediatrics, obstetrics and gynaecology, infectious diseases, epidemiology, hygiene, social medicine, and general medicine. In this internship you gain invaluable clinical experience!
